In the course of saving a blind man from the path of an oncoming truck, Matt Murdock was blinded by a radioactive substance that fell from the vehicle. The radioactive exposure heightened his remaining senses, enabling him to detect the shape and location of objects around him. Matt then went on to adopt the costumed identity of Daredevil to avenge his father, "Battling" Jack Murdock, who had been killed by The Fixer after refusing to throw a boxing match.
